SIG structure:
Chair: Diane Carr (Institute of Education, University of London)
Committee:
John Kirriemuir (Virtual Worlds Watch)
Hamish Macleod and Fiona Littleton (University of Edinburgh)
Natasha Whiteman (University of Leicester)
Martin Oliver (Institute of Education, University of London)

The aims of the SIG :

To support research into the uses and potential of games and virtual world technologies in Higher Education teaching and learning and – crucially – to develop links between research and practice in these areas

To act as a forum for the exchange of ideas across disciplines

To forge an agenda of educationally relevant scholarship and practiceStart date and duration: 12 months from Autumn 2010

Rationale: Games have long been a part of education (from ‘war simulations’ such as Chess, to role-play in the history classroom). Since the 1990’s computer games have moved into the mainstream of popular culture in the UK. This expansion has been mirrored by an explosion of research in the area of games, games-based learning and education. With the emergence of Web 2.0 technologies (social worlds, online games, social networking sites) educators are showing intense interest in the pedagogic potentials of platforms such as Second Life. Some of the issues being researched in relation to this technology include learner engagement and affect, pedagogy in virtual spaces, storytelling, social learning practices, distance learning, inclusion, and accessibility. Attention is also being increasingly directed at games and learning activities that are supported by technology and yet played in real locations (including pervasive gaming, augmented reality gaming and ‘geocaching’). However, the evidence from research and from practice that might inform this interest is patchy in quality, exists in disconnected pockets and is not always available to practitioners in a form they can use.

Our goal is to create a forum that will support the identification, synthesis, development and exchange of evidence between researchers and educators active in these areas. Participants in the proposed Special Interest Group will engage in discussions across disciplinary divides. For example, we will work to bridge the gap that is emerging between those working within the computer sciences, and those investigating games, play and learning in other disciplines (for example: game studies, cultural studies, education, etc.). Members of the SIG will collectively consider the ways that these technologies can impact on teaching and learning.

Additionally, the SIG will also provide an ‘entry point’ for those who wish to explore the learning and educational potentials of these technologies, but currently lack experience. There will also be an effort to identify innovative practices outside of UK Higher Education that has the potential to inform practice in the sector. (The event in Edinburgh, for example – ‘Game, Space, Story’ – will involve school teachers as presenters.) The necessity of connecting research to educational practice and policy will be addressed at the final event of the year – ‘Ethics and Policy’. The SIG will also benefit from the involvement of the Virtual World Watch – one of the few existing places where relevant research and practice in this area is synthesised.

As this suggests, the proposed SIG will connect thematically with existing Academy-supported SIGs including, for example, ELESIG (the evaluation of learners’ experiences of e-learning Special Interest Group) and the Web2.0 ethics SIG. It will also draw upon Academy funded projects on related topics such as simulations and education (e.g. the SIMPLE project), and digital storytelling (Gravestock and Jenkins, 2009), and participation will be invited from NTFS holders with an expressed interest in this area. Attempts will be made to build on these potential associations in order to add value to the SIG’s activities.

Plan for a year’s activities

An online resource and ‘home’ for the SIG will be created. Material generated by the SIG, including position papers generated for the planned events, information about members, commentary and bibliographies will be made available here. Links to relevant sources of primary information, relevant reports, significant research groups and other bodies will be made.

The following events are planned for the first year of the SIG.

Event 1 : ‘Games, virtual worlds and education: Between theory and practice’. This event will mark the launch of the SIG and of the online resource. Hosted at the IOE.

Event 2 : ‘Inter-disciplinarity in games and education research’. An online discussion event convened by D.Carr and the SIG committee

Event 3: ‘Game, Space, Story’. Hosted at Edinburgh.

Event 4: ‘Ethics and policy’. An online discussion event convened by N.Whiteman and the SIG committee.

Session 9 and 10: What ethical issues are raised by the use of technology as a learning resource?

IOE’s MA Education and Technology in Clinical Practice. Module: Education and Technology in Clinical Practice: perspectives and issues. Session 9: Technology, disability and virtual worlds. Session Tutor: Diane Carr

The aim of this session is to explore issues of ethics and research design, while discussing disability, identity and technology. It is not unusual to encounter debates about disability, education and technology that implicitly construct disability as an individual deficit that can be solved or ‘fixed’ by a corresponding, compensating tool. We will examine the problematic aspects of this approach while making reference to Disability Studies perspectives and recent research into the experiences of deaf users of Second Life. In 2007, the integration of a ‘voice’ feature within Second Life meant that users or ‘residents’ had the option to speak to one another via microphone, rather than typing ‘chat text’. This controversial new feature had a considerable impact on some deaf residents, who found themselves suddenly ousted from friendships, organizations and events in Second Life. Meanwhile educators working in Second Life have embraced the voice tool with enthusiasm. We will discuss and disentangle some of these issues, while considering the links between community and identity, disability and technology.

Does the video stuff at iTunes have captions? I’m not really interested in making stuff that I could not watch myself. Well, I could watch it but it’d be pretty dull without subtitles. Anyway. Some stuff on podcasting and accessibility http://www.techdis.ac.uk/index.php?p=3_10_13_3 There is probably more there at the JISC website – they also have an accessibility SIG. Presumably captions/lack of captions (ie subtitles) also has implications for people studying in a second language …? The thing might be to play around with voice to text software and combine (cut and paste? is that possible) with something like http://subtitle-horse.org/. That’d be better than a separate transcript I think, if the process could be made really simple…

Meanwhile – some randomly assembled links to accessibility and podcast things (there’s lots and lots out there…)
